Born in Budapest, Istvan Gyozo Kovacs left Hungary in 1956. He grew up in the US and received his Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Harvard. He is a writer-director-producer of several feature films, and received an Oscar Nomination for his documentary Arthur and Lillie. He has been a professor of film at Stanford University and is currently at San Francisco State University. He is the author of books and articles on film, politics, and the arts. He has also written fiction, poetry, and translated some of the greatest Hungarian poets into English.
